Unlock Minds, Embrace Voices: Celebrating Challenged Books

Unlock Minds, Embrace Voices: Celebrating Challenged Books is a one-day educational event for children, tweens, teens, and their families, promoting a love of reading and an understanding of intellectual freedom. The program emphasizes the importance of access to literature, raises awareness about the issue of book challenges, and celebrates the power of diverse ideas and perspectives in literature.

Through a series of interactive and engaging activities, participants will explore the history, impact, and value of challenged books while fostering critical thinking and creativity. Some activities include:

  • Mark It – Create a personalized bookmark to put in your favorite library book or favorite book at home. Make one for yourself or share it with a friend or family member.
  • Challenged Books Bingo – Learn about frequently challenged books through a fun and familiar game format.
  • Challenged Because – Identify books based on the reasons they have been challenged.
  • Book Giveaway – Books that have been challenged or banned are distributed to the first 25 attendees.
  • Page Turners and Troublemakers: Challenged Books Trivia – Test your knowledge of challenged books and their authors. Discover surprising facts about iconic works.
  • Busted – Take a themed photo with a favorite challenged book against a mugshot-style banner.
  • Books for All – Why do you love books? What do books mean to you? Share a story, draw a picture, tell us why you love to read!
  • “Dear Favorite Author” – Write postcards to favorite authors to express appreciation and support.
  • Rights in the Rings – Test your aim with a ring toss game. Each peg represents a core value: Diversity of Voices, Freedom of Expression, Critical Thinking, Representation Matters, and Everyone’s Story Counts.
